America’s healthcare crisis is caused by needless middlemen — Private Health Insurers
(PHIs) such as Cigna, UnitedHealth and Aetna. PHIs are not in the business of
providing healthcare. Their business is maximizing profit by denying care. Denials
put every insurance subscriber at risk of bankruptcy, medical injury and even death.
The PHIs profits-first bureaucracy also results in massive waste. $350 billion a year
in healthcare spending is squandered on needless paperwork, advertising, ridiculous
CEO salaries, and corporate jets. Too many Physicians and nurses are choosing to
quit medicine; frustrated and stymied by the PHI’s maddening billing requirements.
PHIs spend millions of dollars to manipulate our democracy with deceptive public
relations scams and campaign contributions for politicians. Is it any wonder so many
of our elected representatives are indifferent to the healthcare crisis, or even worse,
trying to pass off bogus, industry-written legislation as reform?
June 19th, the private health insurance industry's ministry of propaganda, 'America's Health Insurance Plans,' holds its annual
convention in San Francisco. Healthcare activists will protest the health insurance industry outside the convention center
and outside PHI offices in eighteen U.S. cities. June 19th ('Juneteenth') is also the anniversary of the emancipation from
slavery — a great day to take to the streets and demand our emancipation from corporate dominated healthcare!
The New York City action will also draw attention to the proposed conversion of GHI/HIP to a for-profit corporation. Conversion
would lead to greater administrative costs which translates to higher premiums, deductibles and co-payments for subscribers.
Privatization would lead to increased denials to patients for necessary procedures resulting in injury, death, and
bankruptcy. GHI/HIP’s fat cat executives are pushing the privatization for the personal million-dollar windfall that will result.
GHI/HIP privatization is a step in the wrong direction and it must be stopped!
America deserves a national not-for-profit, single-payer health insurance program that establishes healthcare as a guaranteed
human right rather than a product purchased by those fortunate enough to afford it. But it won’t happen until we get
active and demand real reform from our elected representatives. Get active for real healthcare reform—join us June 19th.
